BCCI upset after Tuffey is picked for Auckland

Just five days after he played in the final of the 'unrecognised' Indian Cricket League (ICL), Darryl Tuffey was picked by Auckland to play a One-day tour game against the visiting Bangladesh side at the Eden Park Outer Oval on Friday.

This has left the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which was unaware of the development till informed by TOI, seething in anger. "All the boards had agreed in principle at the last ICC CEO's meeting that any player who is part of an unauthorised tournament will not be encouraged. This is a violation of a gentleman's agreement. Lalit Modi (BCCI VP) will write to New Zealand Cricket to protest against this move," said Niranjan Shah, BCCI secretary.

In the Essel Group promoted ICL, Tuffey played for Chandigarh Lions and was to then move to Sydney (to play grade cricket). But as the ICL drew to a close, Tuffey changed his mind and went back to Auckland.

Tuffey will feature for Auckland in rest of the domestic season as well. In the coming days, another Kiwi 'rebel' Chris Harris, who played for Hyderabad Heroes, could also be playing for Canterbury in their national championship.

While Pakistan banned seven players, who figured in the ICL, from playing domestic cricket, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) seems to be going soft on the 'rebels'. "Any (ICL) player will be eligible to play in domestic cricket as non-contracted players (on a match-by-match basis). However, in accordance with the policies of other Test-playing countries, they will not be eligible for selection for any New Zealand Cricket representative teams (National or A teams)," Justin Vaughan, NZC CEO and former allrounder clarified to TOI.
